The Hidden Curriculum’- Where is Sex education in the Class Teacher period?
Saturday, 18th March 2017, 8.30am – 1.30pm
We live in a “sexed-up” society. Popular culture, advertising and multi-media bombards our children from early on with inappropriate if not dangerous content and images. How can we safeguard the innocence of our children and at the same time instill social values that stand above and against the shallow body culture? At the same time, how do we deal with early entry of puberty so we make our children feel safe and protected? Increasingly teachers are asked by their parent community about the content, timing and their approach to Sex Education and of course we owe it to the children we teach to be professional, conscious and loving educators.
We will start the day with specific movement exercises that explore and work on relationships: group games, partner work (e.g. question and answer), trust and confidence building, all of which can become part of your work in the classroom.
Following this part we will look at how Sex Education (or rather Sexuality Education) can be brought in an age appropriate and nourishing way to children in the classroom. How can we prepare students to build and maintain healthy relationships in their lives? How can they recognize and express feelings in a positive way? How do we prepare them for the physical and emotional changes brought on by puberty? Where are the hidden “windows” in the stories we tell, in the games we play, in the sciences, humanities, art and craft we do and when are there times when we need to be clear and explicit?
